In the heart of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival: colour, music and pure joy of life 🎭💃🥁
A sea of colour and music
When carnival begins in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the whole city – and the whole island – turns into a glowing sea of fantasy, music and movement. Day and night, the streets pulse with drums, singing, laughter and exuberant joy 🥁🎤😂.
It is as if the city itself begins to breathe. This festival is much more than entertainment – it is a place for human expression and connection, where everyone may show their joy, their worries, their imagination or their own life story. It touches the heart, lets energy flow and makes the aliveness of life tangible.

The murgas: depth, humour and joy of life
At the centre of this expression are the murgas 🎶🎤. They are much more than music or satire – they are the lived, free expression of carnival. Their roots go back to the early 20th century: the first murgas on Tenerife, such as “Los Marineros del Laya”, were founded by fishermen and dock workers ⚓🐟. They brought their everyday experiences, worries and joy of life onto the streets in song and humour.
Today the murgas are a true body of sound full of pure aliveness. The pieces are often loud and powerful, accompanied by a growing number of percussion instruments with ever more dynamic rhythms. The choreographies are demanding, and the lyrics are created with great enthusiasm, devotion and depth.

This is where their special magic lies: much that otherwise remains unspoken – thoughts, worries or small rebellions 💥 – is brought into the light by the murgas in a wonderful, humorous way 🎭💫. Everything that was taboo before may suddenly be sung, played and laughed about – and all at once resistance turns into love ❤️, quarrels into serenity 🌿, conflict into community 🤝. It is as if the energy of the city flows through everything like a stream of humour and creativity, releasing old tensions and creating a space where peace 🌬️, joy and aliveness can flow.
The crowning of the queen: the muse of carnival
Since 1953, the crowning of the Carnival Queen has been a firm island tradition on Tenerife. From the very beginning, extravagant dream creations have been the heart of this celebration, often designed by renowned designers over months of work especially for this moment ✨🪡. Her dress is a true work of art made of fine fabrics, sparkling stones, precious jewellery, feathers, glitter and bows – a symbol of beauty, expression and feminine presence 🌺👑. These costumes are not only craftsmanship, but also an expression of honouring the feminine, which can be felt on the island all year round.
Parades, Coso, the Sardine and Piñata Chica
Carnival is celebrated in all towns and villages of the island, but most splendidly in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Puerto de la Cruz. The parades and competitions of the music and costume groups, carnival troupes and bands are especially impressive 🥁💃.

A highlight is the Coso, the big carnival parade on Shrove Tuesday, which turns the streets of the city into a dazzling spectacle of colour, dance and music. The festival is accompanied by the Gran Cabalgata Anunciadora 🎺✨, which officially announces carnival, and by the election of the queen and the children’s queen 👑🌟.
A particularly quirky and much-loved ritual is the Burial of the Sardine 🐟🎭. The sardine itself is made of rags, a charming, almost satirical creation that combines humour and tradition perfectly. It is carried through the streets on a throne, accompanied by wailing mourners, men dressed as pregnant women and grieving widows who switch between real tears and humorous interludes. This ritual symbolises the end of the carnival season and turns farewell into a celebration of joy – one last burst of exuberance before “normality” returns.
On the Saturday and Sunday after Shrove Tuesday, the carnival finale comes to an end with the Piñata Chica 🎉🌺, with shows, folk festivals, parades and performances that lack nothing in entertainment, creativity and high spirits.
